Can't decide between Java or Python for college [on hold]

I'm returning to college in about a month for Computer Science. My problem is, I have been programming on the web since I left (4 years ago), using PHP, ASP.NET, and JavaScript. I want to bone up on a more general purpose language that is cross platform before I begin. I would also like to be using a language that is common at my school and I know that they teach the students C++, Java, and Python.

I would like to choose between Java or Python but I'm not sure which one.

What do you think would be better based on job prospects in the next 2 years and community?
